But then again my 67XXX is one of the best five digits. I mean I have never played anything that sounds like that in a new horn. I would say high C# and above is where the 67XXX really pulls away in sound quality from the 54. But the 54 hits harder and more directly.

The 67XXX is brighter and punchier with a more full open singing quality in the upper register. (My 67XXX alto is very lush, but spread and open and nowhere near as loud and piercing). And this is across different types of mouthpieces. But loud and piercing really stand out as surprising descriptors. My biggest observation and surprise is that the horn is LOUD and piercing and seems to lead towards a dryness. Overall the sound is lush and elegant and has a singing quality. Not really different from any other Selmer I've tried. Depending on the reed and mouthpiece I feel that there are usually a couple of notes I need to make adjustments for in order to play in tune. That's cool because its the way I normally play. I've had to place the mouthpiece all the way in to play in tune. And Selmer, please get with the times and add back pack straps to your cases, especially on tenor. My tenor case on my 36 tore up within a week from normal handling. So it does not seem like the best design. It will tear up in a heart beat if you don't absolutely pamper the case. Why did they remove them? Cost cutting measures? Finally, the case is beautiful but the leather like material on the outside is way way way too delicate.

So why does Ishimori have it and not Selmer? Also, I wish Selmer would bring back the grid emblem design on the neck. I did notice however, that Ishimori alto does have a similar looking design around the neck receiver area as sixes. It actually looks like the on sixes had more mass around the area of this design. I'm not sure what was going on with this, but it looks like it may of had an effect on sound and I wonder why the new Selmers don't have that same design. Also, I notice the older sixes had a silver colored metal around the neck receiver area.

Does anyone know how to get them to bring it back? Such a shame. Now do I wish Selmer still put the scroll work on the bell/bow rings, of course. After many hours of practice on different mouthpieces and reeds I'd just like to say that my new 54 (810XXX) alto is wonderful instrument.įirst off the lacquer and engraving and color may be the most beautiful ever produced.
